Tigers to Honor Jennifer Joines on Friday, September 26
Sept. 19, 2008 Stockton, Calif. - Pacific Tiger and Beijing Olympian Jennifer Joines will be honored during the Sept. 26 Pacific Women's Volleyball game against Long Beach State. Joines, who won a silver medal in the Beijing Olympics as a member of the U.S. Women's Volleyball Team, is a former All-American player. She graduated from Pacific in 2003 with degrees in communications and business. Joines was the third Pacific women's volleyball player to represent the Tigers and her country at the Olympic games. Jayne McHugh played in the 1988 Olympics, while Elaina Oden was a member of the 1992 Olympic squad. "Jennifer is an outstanding athlete, an outstanding team member and one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to know," said Pacific Athletics Director Lynn King. "We are all very proud of Jen for what she represents - the best kind of competitor and person. We congratulate her for this remarkable accomplishment." The U.S. Women's Volleyball Team was awarded a silver medal during the games. Many sports commentators noted that it was Joines' tremendous blocking power that helped Team U.S.A. make it to the final round and on to the awards stand. During her career at Pacific (2000-03), Joines delivered 2,225 kills, 686 digs and 639 blocks. A four-time All-American, Joines finished her career as the all-time leader in kills, kills per game (4.89), total attacks (4,615), attacks per game (10.14), and hitting percentage (.350). Since graduating, she has earned a number of tournaments and championship medals, including helping the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team earn a bronze medal in the FIVB (International Federation of Volleyball) World Cup Championship games earlier this year. The game is open to the public at starts at 7 p.m. in the Spanos Center. Tickets cost $7 for general admission, $5 for seniors and children, $3.50 for Pacific faculty and staff, and is free to Pacific students. Tickets can be purchased online at http://pacifictigers.cstv.com/tickets/paci-ticketshome.html or by calling 209.946.2474.
