Derrick Magee, in his third year with the Tigers, was promoted to assistant director of athletics for finance and internal affairs in November of 2007. Magee is responsible for the day-to-day business and financial operation of the athletic business office. His duties include personnel, audit, and budget planning, reporting, and forecasting. Magee is a member of the senior management staff and also oversees all of the aquatic programs and facilities. Magee was selected to participate in the 2008-09 NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males and Females. Magee is one of 13 males and 23 total participants in this year's class. Derrick's tenure in athletics began at Florida A&M University where he played men's basketball, helping to lead the Rattlers to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. After his eligibility ended, Derrick began working within the Rattler athletic department from 1999-2001 as men's assistant coach and Athletic Business Manager. In 2002, Magee accepted an internship with the NBA's Orlando Magic working in the Business Development and Financial Operations Department. Magee relocated with his wife, Sonya, to California at the conclusion of 2002, where he began an alternate career in education working as a teacher and coach in the Ceres Unified and Jefferson School Districts from 2002-2005. In 2005, Magee left for the private sector and worked as a Management Training and Financial Consultant with the Denny's Corporation. As a consultant, Magee was responsible for the financial, managerial, and operational training for over 270 restaurant managers in 93 restaurants between California and Washington. Magee completed his B.S. in physical education in 2000 from Florida A&M University, M.B.A. in Strategic Management in 2005 from California State University, Stanislaus and is currently finishing his Doctorate at Pacific. He holds a California single-subject teaching credential and an Administrative Service Credential. He is a member of Newlight Baptist Church in Tracy, Calif., where he is a financial board member and trustee. He is married to the former Sonya Trinette Miller and they have two children, Adiya (6) and Kamal (4). |
