A Stockton native, Jim Brink is entering his third season as the pitching coach for the Pacific Tigers. During each of his first two seasons at Pacific, Brink has helped the Tigers drop their team ERA and their walks issued. Pacific finished the 2004 season with a team ERA of 6.74 and issued 247 walks in 54 games (4.57 bbpg). Brink's impact during his first season of 2005 was immediate as the Pacific team ERA dropped to 4.52 and only 230 walks in 58 games (3.97 bbpg). During Brink's second season the Tigers' staff continued to improve as Pacific finished the season with a team ERA of 4.17 and issued just 215 walks in 55 games (3.91 bbpg). Before entering the coaching ranks, Brink was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 25th round of the Major League Baseball draft in 1998. He played in both the Athletics and Texas Rangers farm systems from 1998-2003, reaching AAA-Sacramento (Oakland) in 2001. His best seasons at the professional level came in 1999 and 2000 with the Modesto A's as Brink was 3-0 with 29 saves in 47 games in 1999 and 3-2 with 19 saves in 42 games in 2000. Prior to his professional career, Brink was a standout pitcher for San Joaquin Delta College (1995-96) and University of Nevada (1997-98). In his two seasons with the Mustangs, Brink was a combined 22-7 with an ERA just under 3.50. His two years with Nevada were even more impressive as Brink finished 16-6 and set the school record for strikeouts in a season with 108 K's in 1998 (still third in Nevada history). He earned his bachelor's degree in general studies from University of Nevada in 2004. |
