A two-year varsity starter and three-year letter winner at Brighton High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, Essig was a First Team All-Region outfielder as a junior, earning the team's Slugger Award after leading the team in batting average at .462. As a senior, Essig drove in 25 runs, tallied 13 extra-base hits and posted a .672 slugging percentage for coach Kelcey Kemp.
