SENIOR (2004)

Peña's first senior campaign ended just nine games into the 2004 season as he suffered a career-threatening injury while pitching in a game that was washed out by rain against UCLA on Feb. 22nd. Shortly after that contest, Matt had "Tommy John" surgery and is hoping to return to the mound for the Tigers by February of the 2005 season.

JUNIOR (2003)

After recording eight victories in his first 12 starts, Peña ended the season on a three game losing streak to finish 8-7 overall in 16 starts. Despite the sour ending, Peña led the Tigers in wins with eight and innings pitched at 93.2 in 2003. He recorded his eighth victory of the season as the Tigers defeated UC Irvine 5-3 on Thursday, April 17th. Matt allowed just three runs on seven hits and retired the last 11 Anteaters he faced. Matt surpassed his two-year win total coming into the season, six wins, on March 28th as he won his seventh game of the season in the Tigers' 14-6 win over Cal Poly on Friday, April 11th. Matt grabbed his fourth consecutive win of the season on Feb. 28th as he defeated Saint Mary's 5-4. Peña allowed four runs on nine hits in 7.1 innings for the victory. Matt picked up his second complete game of the season as he allowed just one run on three hits and one walk in the Tigers' 2-1 victory over Coppin State on Friday, Feb. 21st. Matt posted Pacific's first complete game of the season on Feb. 14th as he allowed six hits in nine innings, while walking none and recording eight strikeouts. In his second start of the season, Peña was more than impressive as he allowed just one run on five hits in eight innings on Feb. 7th. Peña's performance kept the Tigers in the ballgame as after each team scored one run in the first inning, the game remained tied until Pacific scored in the seventh on the eventual game-winning RBI by Adam Ringer.

SOPHOMORE (2002)

In his second season as a Tiger, Peña finished the season with a 3-8 record and an ERA of 4.85. Peña led the team in appearances with 21, innings pitched with 89.0 and strikeouts with 76, while only relinquishing 100 hits and 41 walks to opposing players.

FRESHMAN (2001)

Matt finished his freshman season with five saves, which was the second-highest single season total in Pacific history at the time. Overall, Peña was 3-6 with a 3.06 ERA (third best in the Big West) in 70.2 innings in which he had 55 strikeouts on the season.

HIGH SCHOOL

Matt graduated from Buchanan High School in Clovis, Calif. in 2000. In his senior season for the Bears, he earned All-Clovis, All-Valley and all-league honors for his 9-3 record with a 1.73 ERA, 118 strikeouts and a .318 batting average.
