2010 (Junior):
Marcus opened the year strong as Pacific's Friday ace, going undefeated in his first eight games pitched, storming out to a 6-0 record after his 8.0 inning outing against UC Riverside on April 9. Pointer started 15 games on the mound for the Tigers in 2010 and pitched a team-high 106.0 innings, finishing second on the team with 65 strikeouts. Pointer's .265 opposing batting average was best on the team. In Big West Conference play, Marcus led the Tigers in strikeouts with 32 and innings pitched at 59.0. After kicking off the season with a 6-0 record, Marcus closed out the year 7-5 with a 4.58 ERA. On March 11 vs. Gonzaga in the Irish Baseball Classic, Pointer tossed his first career complete game with six strikeouts and one walk in a 6-1 victory. On May 14 at Cal State Bakersfield, Pointer pitched eight innings, striking out eight while allowing a single run. Marcus pitched at least eight innings in six of his starts and at least seven innings in 13 of his 15 starts in his first year of Division I competition.
Previous School (Skyline JC):
A 2009 graduate of Skyline Junior College, Marcus and the Trojans finished 27-14 overall during the 2009 season and his 10-4 record as a pitcher tied for the sixth-best in the California Community College Athletics Association (CCCAA). Pointer closed out his junior college career with a 4.12 ERA to give him an 11-3 record and 118 strikeouts in 104 innings, as well as three complete games and one complete game shutout in under 100 pitches to tie for fifth in the CCCAA. Marcus's 10 wins in 2008 were the most by any pitcher on the Trojan staff and his 20 appearances were also a team-high. The Coast Conference named Pointer Pitcher of the Year, as he closed out his career at Skyline with a 21-7 record to place second on the all-time wins record list in school history. Additionally, Pointer was named to the JC All-America team.
High School:
Marcus was a two-sport athlete in basketball and baseball, graduating from Junipero Serra High School in 2007. During Pointer's junior and senior years the Padres closed out the season with a 12-2 record and continued on to win the West Catholic Athletic League in the championship game both seasons. For his efforts on the mound, Marcus was named first team all-league, First Team All-County and in his senior season, earned the award as Pitcher of the Year, after compiling a 10-0 record entering the championship game. Academically, Pointer was a four-year honor roll student who became a member of the National Honor Society.
Personal:
Marcus Pointer was born in San Francisco, Calif., and is the son of Stephen and Sharon Pointer. He has one older sister, Stephanie (24). For fun, Marcus enjoys playing video games, poker and being outdoors. In his second year at Pacific, Pointer is a sports management major with hopes of either playing professional baseball or working in pro ball as a scout, agent, coach or GM.
