Pacific Freshman Hurler Tyler Waldron Earns Big West / Easton Co-Pitcher of the Week
March 17, 2008
Irvine, Calif. - Pacific freshman Tyler Waldron (Pilot Hill, Calif.) earned the first of what is sure to be many athletic honors, earning Big West / Easton Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday, Feb. 17.
Waldron broke Pacific out of a seven-game losing streak with a dominant performance against Minnesota on Friday, Mar. 14. The freshman right-hander posted a complete-game three-hit shutout in the Tigers' 1-0 victory over the Golden Gophers. Waldron, facing just 30 batters in the win, fanned 11 batters and walked one.
Getting stronger as the night wore on, Waldron closed out the ninth inning by striking out the side to pitch around two Pacific errors and preserve the 1-0 win.
Tyler (1-2) earned his first victory of the season, tossing 108 pitches and allowing only one extra-base hit.
Waldon shared the honor with UC Irvine's Scott Gorgen, who held the opposition to just one hit for the third time this season, stifling the Hawaii offense and striking out nine in eight innings to lead the Anteaters to its sixth shutout of the season. The right-hander retired the first 12 batters he faced before a UC Irvine error allowed Hawaii to reach base. The Warriors' only hit off Gorgen, who faced just four above the minimum, came in the seventh inning. The Concord, Calif., native was one strikeout shy of reaching double-digits for third time this year.
Waldron and the Tigers return to the diamond on Tuesday, Mar. 18 as Pacific faces Nevada at 2 p.m. in Peccole Park. Waldron's next outing is expected to be at Stanford on Friday, Mar. 21 as he faces the Cardinal at Sunken Diamond at 7 p.m.
