After our weekend spent at gorgeous Shell Beach taking on Cal Poly, we only came out winning one game from the series. On Friday night, we had an outstanding performance again from Tyler Waldron with him throwing a complete game and allowing only one run. Freshman JB Brown delivered his much anticipated first collegiate home run in the fifth inning. Saturday night we kept our momentum going scoring four runs early in the game, but we struggled in the later innings giving up our early lead and suffered a loss. McCain did a great job battling for us and giving us a chance to win the game.
It was frustrating for us to have great momentum at the start of the game and then let it fall apart in the end. Once again on Sunday, we took an early lead, but let it dwindle down the stretch. Joey Centanni threw well after being shaken up by taking a knee to the head while attempting to field a bunt down the first base line by the second batter he faced in the game. Noah St. Urbain had some great at bats over the weekend hitting three doubles.
We stayed at The Cliffs Resort, right on the beach of Shell Beach, which is just north of Pismo Beach. It was pretty tough to be a Pacific Baseball player this weekend with breakfast every morning looking out over the ocean and the beach about 100 yards from our hotel. We went down in the mornings and explored the tide pools just below our hotel. We caught some crabs, saw a bunch of starfish and an eel. It seemed as if all of the students that go to Cal Poly go to Shell Beach on the weekends because it was packed with students all weekend.
We had Monday off with another whiffle ball game and the fierce wind made it interesting with several home runs. Cal rolled into town Tuesday afternoon and we had a terrible game from the get go. It was frustrating to play so poorly after making some strides over the weekend as we started playing some good baseball. We just had one of those games.
We quickly put it behind us however and set our sights on this weekend's games against Cal State Fullerton who are currently ranked 15th in the nation. We know they play a lot of small ball and try to put a lot of pressure on their opponent's defense, so we worked on quickening everything up defensively in practice this week. We look to get strong pitching performances and to execute offensively this weekend. Our games are Friday and Saturday at 6 PM and Sunday at 1 PM at Klein.
We will be up in Lodi on Monday afternoon helping out with our annual golf tournament where someone will have the chance at one million dollars at the end of the round trying to get a hole in one.
