
Berezay, Centanni, Jackson and Saunders Named to All-Big West Teams
May 30, 2006 Irvine, Calif. -- Four members of the Pacific Baseball team were named to the All-Big West on Tuesday, May 30. Senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) highlighted the post-season accolades for the Tigers as he was named to the All-Big West First Team. Senior Bob Saunders (Oakland, Calif.) was named to the All-Big West Second Team, while freshman Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.) and senior Anthony Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) earned All-Big West Honorable Mention. In his second year as a Tiger, Berezay once again competed in every game for Pacific. Berezay was the cornerstone of the Pacific offense in his senior season, finishing the year second on the team with a .322 batting average, second on the team with 65 hits, second on the team with 11 HR, and second on the team with 39 RBI. Matt led the Tigers with 18 doubles this season and a .584 slugging percentage. Berezay also led Pacific with a .448 on-base percentage and did not commit an error during the season. Berezay A mid-season addition to the starting lineup, Saunders was a spark for Pacific during the Big West Conference season. Bob finished the year with a .317 batting average in 33 games, including 26 starts. In the Tigers' 21 Big West contests, Saunders led the team with a .348 average. One of the two Tigers' honorable mention recipients, Jackson garnered recognition as an outfielder but provided the Tigers with a utility player who could play in the outfield and as a middle infielder. In his final season, Jackson posted a .298 batting average while driving in 21 RBIs. He hit three home runs on the year, including taking advantage of the Tigers' new stadium to post a single home run from both sides of the plate. Jackson showed his speed on the base paths as he led the team with 16 stolen bases, good enough for sixth in the Big West. Joining Jackson on the honorable mention list, Centanni emerged in his first season as one of th eTigers most erliable and resilient pitchers. Given the ball as a starter, Centanni emerged with a 2.77 ERA, second best on the team, while finishing with a 6-4 overall record. Of the Tigers five complete games on the season, Centanni threw three of them, all coming during the conference season. Centanni was named Co-Pitcher of the Week for the Big West on April 13after throwing a complete game, 2-1 win, over UC Santa Barbara that week.
