July 2, 2008
Stockton, Calif. - With the Fourth of July holiday approaching to mark summer's halfway point for Pacific athletes eight position players and six pitchers are looking to take their game to the next level playing with amateur summer teams from Massachusetts to Alaska. Representing one of the nation's premiere leagues, the Cape Cod League in Massachusetts, sophomore right handed pitcher Tyler Waldron is spending his summer throwing for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in Yarmouth, Mass. Waldron had an excellent first season for the Tigers with a 5.20 ERA in 15 appearances -- good for third overall. On the other side of the country, junior lefty David Rowse has been seeing time in the Arctic Circle in the Alaska Collegiate League with the Mat-su Miners. Of all active players last season Rowse was second in overall appearances, pitching in 21 of the Tigers' 55 games. Two Tigers are seeing international playing time in the Western Baseball League of Saskatchewan, Canada. Sophomore outfielder Nick Longmire and sophomore righthanded pitcher Thomas Berolzheimer put on red jerseys for the Yorkton Cardinals. Longmire played in nearly every game of the 2008 season and led all batters with a .323 batting average in 198 at-bats. Berolzheimer led the Tigers with 25 appearances last season. In the middle of the country, four Tigers are playing for the McKinney Marshalls in the Texas Collegiate League. Senior catcher Joe Oliveira, sophomore third baseman J.B. Brown, junior utility infielder Mike Walker and senior southpaw Joey Centanni are spending their summer together in the Texas heat. Centanni's 4.97 ERA was the second lowest on the squad. From the plate, Walker notched the fourth-highest batting average with a .293. Oliveira was fifth on the team in the hit count connecting with 57. Brown appeared in 45 games for the Tigers in his freshman season.
The remaining six Tigers are staying relatively close to home in various leagues throughout California. Representing the Sierra Baseball League are four players either on the Lodi Grape Sox or the Humboldt Crabs rosters. Junior hurler Hunter Carnevale is the only Tiger to play in Humboldt this summer. Over 17 appearances he saw played in 38.2 innings. Junior outfielder Matt Fuson, senior pitcher Larry Holscher and senior righthander Mark McCain are the remaining three players who round out Sierra Baseball League play for the Grape Sox. In his junior year, McCain posted a 5.23 ERA with a 1-6 record. Holscher finished just behind him in the ERA column going 2-4 with a 5.57 ERA. Two final players, senior catcher Kurt Wideman and sophomore righty Corey Kohnke are spending their summer playing for the Maxim Yankees of the California Collegiate League. Wideman saw action in 48 games last season and hit .266 with a .422 slugging percentage.
