Nick Longmire Blogs About Pacific's Offseason In Preparation For 2010
Dec. 18, 2009
No other baseball team in the country has worked harder than we, the Pacific Tiger baseball team, have this fall. From the baseball field to the weight room, we have made huge strides as a team and individually, from the beginning of the fall until now. I am very excited to see what this season has in store for us. This year the coaches shook it up a little bit. Instead of practicing at the end of the day, we started practice and everything at 8 a.m. and went to classes afterward. At first I did not like this because I hate waking up any earlier than 9 a.m. most of the time (which I can also say for most of my team), so having to get up at 7 a.m. was really hard. Over time I grew to like this new way because that meant after my classes ended in the afternoon I was free to relax and do whatever I wanted the rest of the day. This fall there was a lot of focus on being competitive with one another just like we would an opposing team during the regular season. I think this was very good for everyone especially the new freshmen and transfers because they got to experience a little taste of what it's like to compete at a Division I level and what the atmosphere is like. This was definitely noticeable during our final Orange and Black series at the end where the orange team, led by captains David Rowse and Ben Gorang, got extremely lucky and won the best-of-five series against the black team that I was on. Even after my team was up two games to none, they found a way to win three before we could win one, and after the loss my entire team decided to shave our heads. It didn't bother me too much but for people like Tye Davis and Scott Isbell, it was pretty funny to see. That series was a good preview of how good Pacific Baseball is going to be this year. We are returning most of our offense which batted .322 as a team last year and we have a lot more depth with our pitching staff.
In the weight room we did a lot of things to get faster and be more explosive. Four times a week we would train hard in the weight room and it has made a noticeable difference. As a team, we averaged a 60-pound increase on our squats from the beginning of the fall until now. Now I would like to give some shout outs to the guys on my team who set some new school and baseball records this fall. First, Hunter Carnevale being a beast and back squatting 555 lbs. which is a new school record. Then we have BC Chillin' Brett Christopher running a 6.36 second 60-yd dash, a new baseball record, and running a 3.90 second pro agility test good for a new school record. Lastly myself, benching 335 lbs. ties the baseball record. I had a lot of fun this fall but now it's time to get ready for the real deal. I encourage all of you to come out and support the baseball team this spring. The Pacific baseball team begins its 2010 season at home against San Francisco for a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday, Feb. 19. |
