
Tigers Drop Double Overtime Thriller to Loyola Marymount, 88-85

Anchorage, AK - The Pacific men's basketball team lost an 88-85 double overtime contest to Loyola Marymount on Friday, Nov. 24 in the semifinal round of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska. The Tigers fall to 2-2 on the season, while Loyola Marymount improves to 5-1. Brandon Worthy led LMU with 32 points, including a three-pointer at the end of the first overtime period to extend the game. Worthy scored with 29 seconds left in regulation to tie the game, and after using the shot clock the Tigers were unable to score on a shot inside by senior Michael White (Capitola, Calif.). Pacific held the Lions to just two field goals in the first eight and a half minutes as the Tigers raced to a 23-7 lead. Turnovers by the Tigers helped the Lions get back into the game. After committing only one turnover in the first nine minutes, the Tigers had 11 the rest of the half and Loyola closed to 40-31 at halftime. Pacific finished with 28 turnovers in the game. The Tigers were able to extend the lead to 14, 53-39, with 16:16 remaining, but then was limited to two field goals the rest of regulation. The Lions took their first lead of the second half, 61-58, when Worthy completed a three-point play with 5:08 remaining. Pacific regained the lead with 55 seconds left on a basket by White but Worthy drove the lane and scored to tie the game. In the first overtime, two free throws by Anthony Brown (Sacramento, Calif.) and one by Steffan Johnson (Kent, Wash.) gave Pacific the lead with 21.9 second remaining. Worthy answered with a contested 3-pointer from just off the baseline. In the second overtime, Matthew Knight broke a 78-78 tie with two free and Loyola held off the Tigers with a basket by Derick Grubb and six more free throws.
White led Pacific with a career-high 20 points, while Johnson tied his career high with 19 points. Brown had his second straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Tigers will play either Hawai'i in the third place game on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 6:00 p.m. (7:00 p.m. in Stockton). |
