Bordeaux Takes Down #1 Seed at The Amateur Championship

June 18, 2008

Turnberry, Scotland - TJ Bordeaux took down the top seeded player in The Amateur Championship Wednesday morning, defeating Englishman Sam Hutsby 3&2 in the first round of match play. Bordeaux, who took the 64th seed after stroke play finished, is the lone American left in the field.

"It was an overall solid round," said Bordeaux. "The wind blew pretty hard but I putted really well."

TJ, who never trailed in the match, made birdie on 16th to close it out. He now faces Jason Barnes in the second round of match play.

"This simply shows that TJ can play with and beat the best amateurs in the world," said Pacific head coach Brandon Goethals. "He's made a name for himself in the collegiate ranks as a freshman and now he's ventured onto the world's stage and doing just what we expected. I know TJ, and I know his expectations weren't to just go over there and compete. He wants to win."

FROM JUNE 17th -- Pacific golfer TJ Bordeaux posted a two-day score of 150 at Turnberry to move on to the second stage of The Amateur Championship. Bordeaux shot an opening round even-par 72 at Turnberry Kintyre and followed up with a 78 at Turnberry Ailsa. His 150 total put him in 49th place; the 64 lowest scores then compete in match play to decide the Amateur Champion.

Playing in rain and gusty winds at the Scottish course, TJ played to an even par Monday morning, carding four birdies on the day. Then Pacific's 2007-08 stroke leader and individual champion at the Oregon Duck Classic took on the Ailsa the following day, a 7,211-yard, par 70 course. His 78 put him a stroke up on the competition and moved him on to match play. Each match will consist of one round of 18 holes except the final, which will be held over 36-holes.

Bordeaux will begin the first round of match play tomorrow morning. The Amateur Championship is held at the Westin Turnberry Resort in Scotland and has featured such past champions as Bobby Jones, Sergio Garcia and Jose-Maria Olazabal.

Bordeaux was invited to play in the event after winning the Oregon Duck Classic. The Amateur Championship was found¬ed in 1885 by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and for some time considered one of the Major championships alongside the US Amateur, the US Open and the British Open.
