Grieb Qualifies For US Amateur With Six-Shot Victory

July 31, 2008

San Diego, California - The Pacific Golf team isn't content with sending two of their own to the US Amateur, nor are they content with teammates; the Tigers are sending ROOMMATES. Sophomore Alex Grieb fired back-to-back rounds of 68 at Sycuan to join teammate and roommate TJ Bordeaux in the US Amateur.

Playing the long, tree-lined Sycuan in his hometown of San Diego, Grieb conducted a clinic with his wedges. His 136 gave him a six-stroke victory and a spot in the US Amateur in two weeks.

"Everything from 125-yards and in I hit to about five feet," said Grieb. "I had really been working hard on my wedges and that was a big key."

Grieb took the top of three qualifier spots awarded for the US Amateur. The tournament is played at Pinehurst in North Carolina on August 18-24.

"I saw the story on TJ qualifying last night and I thought to myself, `how cool would it be if we both got in, teammates in the Amateur'," said Grieb. "It was definitely some motivation for me."

"I'm really excited for Alex as I can see his hard work over the summer is starting to pay off," said head coach Brandon Goethals. "To have two of our guys in the Amateur, roommates no less, it shows you how far this program has come."
