
Artem Gramma Continues Strong Fall Play, Wins Two Matches on the First Day of ITA Championship

Berkeley, Calif- The Pacific men's tennis team competed in first day of action at the Wilson/ITA Northern Cal Championship on Friday October 17. Artem Gramma led the Tigers with two victories on the day. Starting off the day for Pacific was junior Vegerd Veskimagi (Saku, Estonia) as he took on Chris Aria of UC Davis. After starting out flawless in the first set, Veskimagi could not go the distance with Aria as he fell 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 in three sets. Sophomore Artem Gramma (Krivoj Roj, Ukraine) was second up for Pacific as he set the tone early for the day with a sound 6-1, 6-1 victory over Torin Ching of USF. The winning ways continued for Pacific as freshman Ryan Kim (Elk Grove, Calif.) took down Kevin Lang from UC Davis in his first action of day, 6-3, 6-1. Junior Chase Oliphant (Indio, Calif.) took on Bryan Thorp of Portland, and fell in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to complete the first round of play for Pacific. The afternoon brought around the second round action for three Tigers players who had advanced. Once again, Gramma came up big for Pacific as he defeated the No. 7 seed Mirko Zapletal of Fresno State 6-2, 6-3. Senior Moritz Starke (Bamberg, Germany), who had a bye into this round, completed the sweep of Duncan McDonld Korth from University of Oregon, 6-1, 6-4. Kim was the last Tiger to compete in the afternoon play, and fell to Blake Muller from Stanford, 6-2, 6-3. The Tigers begin the second day of the Wilson/ITA Northern Cal Championship with doubles play beginning at 8:00am.
