Moritz Starke Continues Winning, Joins Vegerd Veskimagi, Christian Kuehne in Sunday Play
Oct. 18, 2008
Berkeley, Calif. - After a successful run all throughout the fall tournament season, sophomore Artem Gramma (Krivoj Roj, Ukraine) finally ran into a wall, heading home after the singles and doubles Rounds of 32 in the ITA Northern Cal Championships on Oct. 18. Senior Moritz Starke (Bamberg, Germany), however, won his Round of 32 in singles action and will join two of his teammates in Sunday play. Gramma had some trouble finding the winning rhythm he's been comfortable with and was swept by Washington's No. 17 David Chu 6-0, 6-1. He was able to pick it up for one round in doubles play when paired with junior Vegerd Veskimagi (Saku, Estonia). Veskimagi and Gramma knocked off Alex Cornelissen-Mikael Myrhed of Oregon in the Round of 64, but could not repeat the feat in the Round of 32. As for Starke, he gave Washington the other side of the taste of a sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Derek Drabble. With his win in the Round of 32, Starke moves on to tomorrow's quarterfinals. But in doubles play, Starke suffered the same fate as all his other teammates. Alongside freshman Ryan Kim (Elk Grove, Calif.), Moritz felt the sting of a 8-4 loss. Play resumes tomorrow, Oct. 19, at 9:45 a.m. Earning a bye in Saturday's play were Veskimagi and freshman Christian Kuehne (Morbach, Germany) in singles' consolation action. Because the two both lost in the first round on Friday, they will compete in the singles consolation bracket beginning on Sunday.
