Vegerd Veskimagi Moves to Consolation Semifinals at ITA Championships
Oct. 19, 2008
Berkeley, Calif. - In the third day of the ITA Northern Cal Championships, the Pacific men's tennis team advanced junior Vegerd Veskimagi (Saku, Estonia) into the semifinals round of the consolation bracket on Sunday, Oct. 19. Veskimagi is the only singles player left in the tournament. Ninth-seeded Moritz Starke (Bamberg, Germany) did well in his first two matches of the tournament, but was knocked out of the tournament early on Sunday after his 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 upset to 17th-seeded Kiryl Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State. While Vegerd swept both of his first two consolation rounds in Sunday play, teammates freshman Christian Kuehne (Morbach, Germany) and junior Chase Oliphant (Indio, Calif.) could not come up with the same results. Kuehne had to withdraw due to an injury in his first round, while Oliphant defeated San Francisco's Peder Steen 6-1, 6-1 in the Round of 32. His luck stopped there, falling in the Round of 16. The ITA Championships will resume on Monday, Oct. 20, with the singles consolation semifinals and final match up.
