Vegerd Veskimagi Splits a Pair, Falls in Consolation Final
Oct. 20, 2008
Berkeley, Calif. - After an early first round loss to UC Davis' Chris Aria on Friday, Oct. 17, junior Vegerd Veskimagi (Saku, Estonia) drastically turned around his game to win four-straight matches, which landed him in the consolation finals round on Monday, Oct. 20. As the only Tiger left in the ITA Northern Cal Championships, Veskimagi headed into the final after knocking off Brad Bator from Washington in a tie-break 5-7, 6-4, 1-0(11-9) match. "I was real proud that Vegerd turned around after losing the first match," head coach Kristy Schroeder said. "He really played well; he did a great job with his mental game and made some big improvements this weekend." In the finals round, Veskimagi was down one set to none, when another Husky, Ryo Sekiguchi, came out quickly on top after a 6-2 set. Vegerd was not ready to go home, however, pushing the second set to a tie break. Ultimately, he could not come back with enough time to push a third, decisive set and lost the match 7-6(3) to take second place in the consolation round. The Tigers now have one week off and will resume fall tournament play on Oct. 30 at the Saint Mary's Gael Classic.
