Director of Tennis and Men's Tennis Head Coach Guido Baumann Resigns

July 17, 2008

Stockton, Calif. - University of the Pacific Director of Athletics Lynn King announced today that Director of Tennis & Head Men's Tennis Coach Guido Baumann has resigned to return to his native Germany. A national search for a new men's tennis coach will begin immediately.

Guido has done an outstanding job, both as Men's Tennis Coach and Director of Tennis," said King. "His contributions to the department go far beyond his conference championships, NCAA appearances and Coach of the Year awards. We will all miss Guido, but we wish him and his family well."

My family in Germany needs my support at this time and I am moving back home to be with them," said Baumann. "I would like to thank everybody in the Athletic Department: my colleagues, the entire staff and the administrators, especially Lynn King. I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to coach here; this department was my family away from home for a long time and I will leave with many fond memories. I would also like to thank all the people in the community who have supported the program over the years, especially Kay Sweet and Mr. and Mrs. Prince."

Baumann was named Big West Conference Coach of the Year four times, in 2000-01, 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2007-08. He guided the team to Big West titles in 2000-01 and 2003-04, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in those years and in 1999-2000 after earning an at-large berth. He led the Tigers to the Big West Conference Championship Match for the seventh time this past year.

He led the Tigers to a 133-116 record in 11 years, including a 31-19 mark in Big West Conference dual matches. Baumann's players earned 28 ITA Scholar-Athlete All-Americans during his tenure, adding a ITA All-Academic Team Awards in 2004 and 2007.

A native of Schwanfeld, Germany, Baumann came to Pacific after serving as an assistant coach at Georgia College and Augusta State.
