Kristy Schroeder Named Interim Men's Tennis Coach

Sept. 19, 2008

Stockton, Calif. - University of the Pacific Director of Athletics Lynn King has announced the hiring of Kristy Schroeder as interim men's tennis head coach.

It will be the second stint at Pacific for Schroeder, who was the assistant softball coach for the Tigers from 1995-98. While at Pacific, she earned a Master of Sciences in sport sciences ('97) with an emphasis in Sports Psychology and helped to develop a mental training program for Pacific's athletes. Schroeder is currently working with some of Pacific's teams in that area.

"We are very pleased to have Kristy accept this interim position," said King. "The skills she brings to our program will enhance everything we do. She is an excellent coach and I am confident she will help our players progress."

"This is an exciting challenge for me, and I think I can have a positive impact on the program," said Schroeder. "I think by focusing on the mental aspects of the game, we can improve the consistency of the team. I have great affection for the University of the Pacific, and I was more than happy to accept the interim position. I hope I can maintain the program's level of success."

Schroeder collected 173 wins in six years as the head softball coach at UC Santa Barbara, leaving after the 2007 season. She turned UCSB's softball program into an annual contender for postseason play in her time on the coast. In 2003, her second year with the Gauchos, she led UCSB to a 34-22 mark, the best overall record in school history. In 2007, Schroeder led UCSB to its third 30-win season after posting a 30-23 record and also coached the Gauchos to three NCAA Tournament appearances. She earned Big West Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors in 2002, with Pacific's Brian Kolze.

In her first head coaching position during the 1999 season, Schroeder took a sub-.500 program at Division II Truman State in Kirksville, Missouri to their first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship in thirteen seasons and a national ranking of 23rd. Truman State also made the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in more than 10 years, an accomplishment that earned Schroeder her first of back-to-back MIAA Coach of the Year honors. Schroeder followed up her inaugural season at Truman State with another conference title and a South Central Regional berth, improving the Bulldogs' ranking to 17th in the nation in 2000. Schroeder left Truman State after the 2001 season as the winningest coach in school history, finishing with an overall record of 134-34-1.

A former UCLA shortstop and two-time national champion with the Bruins, Schroeder also played for the Bruins' women's tennis team in 1994. She was recognized as the shortstop on the Pac 10's All-Decade Team for the 1990's after helping the UCLA to Pac-10 Championships in '91 and '93. A women's soccer player as well, Schroeder is the only three-sport athlete in UCLA's history.
