No. 14 Pacific Sweeps Past No. 8 Cal State Northridge

STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 14 Pacific men's volleyball team earned its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory of the 2007 season with a three-game sweep of No. 8 Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Alex G. Spanos Center. Game scores were 31-29, 30-26, and 30-28.
With the win, Pacific improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in MPSF action. Cal State Northridge dropped to 2-3 overall (1-1 MPSF).
The Tigers led the way for most of game one until two late attack errors by Pacific gave Cal State Northridge game point at 29-28. However, the Matadors Kevin McKniff committed a service error to tie the game back at 29-29 and the Tigers put away the game with back to back kills by senior Matt Cornell (Granada Hills, Calif.) and junior Pekka Seppanen (Kuopio, Finland).
Game two saw the Tigers break a 26-26 tie by scoring four straight points, which included two kills by Seppanen and one by Cornell to win the game 30-26. In game three, the Matadors tied up the game at 28-28 before the Tigers scored the final two points to wrap up the match.
Pacific was led by Cornell and Seppanen with 16 kills each, while senior Garrett Morales (Long Beach, Calif.) added 46 assists and senior Andreas Baboulidis (Ruesselsheim, Germany) added 12 digs.
For the Matadors, Issac Kneubuhl posted 12 kills, while McKniff collected five block assists.
Cal State Northridge outhit the Tigers .333 to .330 for the match, but the Matadors tallied just 40 kills to Pacific's 54.
The Tigers are next in action on January 18th as they take on Hawai'i in the first of two MPSF games on the island. First serve is scheduled for 7pm Hawai'ian time.
