Pacific Women's Basketball Community Outreach
April 17, 2008
The Pacific Women's Basketball team went to Morada Middle school on April 17th, 2008 for an assembly. Amy VanHollebeke, Amber Simmons, Karen Dawkins, Janae Young, Whitney Price and Beckett Brennan spent time talking to the 7th and 8th graders about what it is like to be a college student-athlete, overcoming obstacles, perseverance and achieving the goals one sets in life. Most of the kids come from difficult backgrounds and being able to see young women they can relate to on multiple levels succeed, was an amazing inspiration to them.
The kids also had an opportunity to interact with the players on the court. Their faces lit up. It was incredible to watch our student athletes with the kids. They did defensive drills and shooting competitions. You could tell by the energy of the kids how much fun they were having.
Our players also recognized and rewarded one of the young boys who improved his attitude, attendance and his GPA over the course of this year. It was important to reach these kids on different levels and show them how important school is. Recognizing one of the boys from their class in front of the entire group was a way to show how hard work pays off. It also helps them see that they can accomplish anything as long as they put in the effort and never give up. This was a great opportunity for our team to give back and I know all that were involved had a wonderful time.
