Tigers' Winning Ways Continue, as Katy McDonough and Kelly Miller Take Home Player of the Week Honors
Oct. 21, 2008
Radford, Va.- The Pacific field hockey team, coming off of a three-win sweep of NorPac opponents over the weekend, received more good news on Tuesday Oct. 21, as Pacific's Katy McDonough (Ventura, Calif.) and Kelly Miller (Monterey, Calif.) received both the NorPac Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week Awards. Junior forward McDonough was voted the NorPac Offensive Player of the Week for her stellar performance on the Tigers' road trip this past weekend. In Pacific's first game against Appalachian State, McDonough scored the first goal en route to a 3-0 Tiger victory. She then followed up that performance with an assist on Pacific's game-tying goal against Radford on Saturday, and on Sunday McDonough rose to the top with her best performance of the weekend. In a matchup against Longwood, McDonough was involved on each of the Tigers' three goals as she scored one and assisted on two others to give Pacific a 3-2 victory, and a clean-sweep on the weekend. Making her season debut after an injury plagued first half of the season, senior goalie Miller put up a strong defensive effort for the Tigers to earn her first career NorPac Defensive Player of the Week award. In her fist game against Appalachian State, Miller posted a four-save shutout for Pacific, anchoring the defense in Pacific's win. In Saturday's matchup against Radford, Miller came up big again for the Tigers, with six saves total, including a couple of second half saves that secured the win for Pacific. On Sunday against Longwood, Miller put up her best performance of the season with a nine save outing which included 10 penalty corners and 17 shots from the Lancers. McDonough and Miller's awards mark the fourth time this season that Pacific has received a NorPac Player of the Week Award, with junior Lisa Muhl (Harleysville, Pa.) receiving Defensive Player of the Week on September 9th and McDonough receiving Offensive Player of the Week last week on October 13.
This marks the second time in McDonough's career that she has won consecutive NorPac Player of the Week awards, and the fifth time overall in her career. She previously won the honors in back-to-back weeks on September 5 and 12 in 2006, and once on October 10 of the same season. This is the first career Player of the Week award for Miller. Pacific is next in action on Sunday, October 26, as they take on Stanford at home in their final NorPac Conference contest of the year at Brookside Field in Stockton, Calif. |
