Dickson And The Tigers Down Tennessee-Martin, 1-0
Sept. 8, 2007
Honolulu, Hawaii - Behind a lone goal from senior Bunny Dickson (Millbrae, Calif.), the Pacific women's soccer team defeated Tennessee-Martin, 1-0, on Saturday, September 8. With the win the Tigers improved to 3-0-1 on the season while the Skyhawks dropped to 1-1. From the outset the Skyhawks were no match for the speed and ball skills of the Tigers as Pacific dominated Tennessee-Martin from the opening whistle until the final whistle. Despite playing their second game in as many nights, the Tigers managed to fire off a season-high 22 shots against the Skyhawks' defense with seven on goal. The Tigers' lone strike of the night came in the 30th minute of the game on a strike to the top right corner by Dickson. Dickson found herself behind the Tennessee-Martin defense after freshman Sammi Teramae (Kapolei, Hawaii) chipped a pass over the defense to the feet of Dickson. With the perfectly placed pass, Dickson did what she does best, netting her second strike of the weekend and season. For Teramae, the assist marked her second of the tournament and fourth of the season to give her eight points, tying her for the team lead. Pacific had an abundance of chances throughout the night with 11 shots coming in each half. Senior Carla Vellutini (Elk Grove, Calif.) had one of the Tigers' best chances of the night as she was able to spin on her defender in the box to create an open look at the goal. However, Vellutini would not get an opportunity to take her shot as she was tripped from behind, losing possession of the ball and the scoring chance. Defensively, the Tigers gave up just five shots on the night forcing senior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) to produce four saves for the game as she notched her third clean sheet of the season in four games. At the other end, Cara Sullivan made six saves in goal for the Skyhawks.
The Tigers will await the finish of the Hawai'i/Tennessee-Martin game Sunday, September 9, to find out the champion of the Outrigger Classic Tournament. With a Hawai'i win, the tournament champion will be determined by goal differential. Pacific will be back in action on Saturday, 15 as they travel to Portland, Ore. to take on the Vikings of Portland State. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm. |
