Tigers take down Red Raiders, 7-0
Feb. 17, 2006
Tucson, Ariz. - Behind a one-hitter from sophomore Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.) and a three-run home run from junior Lizzie Hagen (Anaheim, Calif.), the Pacific softball team defeated Texas Tech, 7-0, on Friday, Feb. 17. With the win the Tigers moved to 3-3 on the season, while Texas Tech dropped to 2-5. After falling in game one of the Worth Wildcat Invitational, the Tigers responded with an offensive explosion against Texas Tech to take the 7-0 shutout. Even with the offensive prowess, the Tigers' biggest note of importance was the excellent pitching performance by sophomore Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Claif.) who threw her first shutout of the season, going 6.0 innings, giving up just one hit on the day. Jorgensen found herself in only one jam in the game, loading the bases in the fifth inning with two outs, but she was able to induce a fly ball and get out of the inning with no damage. Jorgensen's no-hitter came to an end in the fifth inning as well. Offensively, the Tigers responded to a heartbreaking defeat in the first game of the tournament by taking their aggression out on the Red Raiders' pitching staff. The Tigers got rolling in the second rotation through the lineup, punching across two runs in the second inning, spurred on by a one out walk to leadoff hitter, junior Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.). From there, Pacific posted crooked numbers in each of the final three innings, scoring one in the fourth, three in the fifth and one more for insurance in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Tigers' three run fifth came off the bat of junior Lizzie Hagen (Anaheim, Calif.) as she belted her first home run of the season, clearing the bases of both base-runners to put the Tigers up six.
With a seven run cushion, freshman Heidi Helberg (Brentwood, Calif.) made her first collegiate appearance in the circle for the Tigers, inducing a ground ball and two pop ups in the inning. Offensively, the Tigers finished with eight hits, led by Carbonatto's 2-for-3 performance, reaching base in each of her four at bats (one walk and an error). Hagen's three RBI led the way as well and the freshman tandem of Casey Goldsand (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Lauren Weyman (Carlsbad, Calif.) each had one hit while driving in two runs, Goldsand's hit was her first collegiate triple. The Red Raiders struggled in the field in their first game in the tournament, committing three errors in the contest while being held to just one hit offensively. Elizabeth Eimen picked up Texas Tech's lone single. The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow, February 18th as they play two games in day two of the Worth Wildcat Invitational. Pacific begins with a game against Tennessee Tech at 9:00 am (8:00 am PST) followed by a game against No. 18 Missouri. |
