Tigers just miss upset of No. 3 Arizona, fall 1-0
Feb. 19, 2006
Tucson, Ariz. - The Pacific Tigers softball team fell just short as the Tigers fell to No. 3 Arizona, 1-0, on Sunday, Feb. 19.
The loss dropped Pacific to 3-6 on the season, while Arizona moved to 11-0.
Pacific's sophomore Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.) gave up just seven hits and one run to the No. 3 Wildcats in her six innings pitched, falling to 1-2 on the season.
Arizona scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth on a suicide squeeze play. Kristie Fox led off with a single up the middle and was pinch run for by Kelly Nelson. Chelsie Mesa doubled to left, moving Nelson to third. Catcher Callista Balko laid down a drag bunt along the third base line, bringing in Nelson.
Despite having runners at second and third and no outs, Jorgensen got out of the inning without any further damage.
Arizona's Alicia Hollowell (6-0), however, made the run stand up, limiting Pacific to four hits and one walk in the game. Hollowell entered the game alllowing just seven hits in five starts this season.
The Tigers had opportunities to tie the game in each of the final two innings as Pacific had runners on the corners in both the sixth and seventh innings. Hollowell, however, ended each scoring chance with a strikeout.
Pacific juniors Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.) and Jennifer Curtier (Lancaster, Calif.) each had one hit in the loss.
The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 24 as Pacific begins play in the Palm Springs Tournament with a 10:30 a.m. game against University of Illinois-Chicago. The Tigers will take on Baylor at 1 p.m. that afternoon.
