Curtier Lifts Tigers To A 6-5 Extra Inning Win OVer Miami (OH)
March 12, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - After picking up where the game left off last night, the Pacific softball team pulled out an eight inning, 6-5, win over Miami (OH) on Sunday, March 12, in the finale of the Stanford Classic. With the win the Tigers improved to 10-9 on the year while the RedHawks fell to 12-13 overall.
With rain calling an end to last nights action, the Tigers picked up play in the bottom of the first inning, with junior Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.) standing at third base after walking and stealing two bases the night before. From there, Pacific pushed across three runs in the inning, taking advantage of three RedHawk errors in the inning. Junior Jennifer Curtier (Lancaster, Calif.) got the Tigers on the board first with a one out double that drove in Carbonatto.
The Tigers relinquixhed two runs in the third inning as the RedHawks took advantage of a missed pop up in the infield to score both of their runs.
Up one, Pacific added two in the fourth inning as Carbonatto came through with a double down the line that scored sophomore Mandy Hickman (Phoenix, Ariz.) who had worked a one out walk earlier. A perfectly played squeeze by freshman Lauren Weyman (Carlsbad, Calif.) gave the Tigers their fifth run of the game, a crucial run as Miami (OH) would score three in the fifth to tie the game. Three doubles in the inning by the RedHawks knotted the game at five runs a piece, eventually forcing extra innings.
Heading into the eighth, the international tie-breaker came into play, but freshman Chelsea Engle (Folsom, Calif.), who had come in for relief the a two innings prior, put down a second and third, no out, jam, by inducing three straight infield outs.
With a runner at second to start the inning, the Tigers did not give the RedHawks any more chances as Carbonatto was intentionally walked and Weyman placed down a bunt single to load the bases for Pacific. Two pitches later, Curtier came through again for the Tigers, roping a single into the right center gap, scoring the game-winning run for Pacific. On the day Curtier was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two walks, one intentional, to lead Pacific offensively.
In the circle, Engle improved her record to 4-3 on the year after giving up just two hits in 3.2 innings pitched. Engle also struck out four while walking none.
In the loss, the RedHawks out hit the Tigers, posting 12 hits in the game to the Tigers' seven. They were led by Leslie Macedo who went 3-for-4 with one RBI for the game. In the circle, Courtney Salmon picked up the loss despite giving up just one run in 3.2 innings pitched.
The Tigers will next be in action on Wednesday, March 15, as they play host to Colorado State for a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
