Stockton, Calif. - A three-run fifth inning put the Pacific softball team over the top as the Tigers defeated Santa Clara, 9-1, in five innings in game two of a doubleheader on Wednesday, Mar. 12.
The victory lifted the Tigers to 13-14 on the season, while Santa Clara fell to 4-26 overall.
The Tigers came out hopping in the bottom of the first inning, scoring six runs on five hits, two hit batters, a walk and an error. Freshman Lindsey Pierce (Camarillo, Calif.) and junior Casey Goldsand (Scottsdale, Ariz.) got the inning going with back-to-back singles. Junior Lauren Weyman (Carlsbad, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Following a line out from sophomore Kellee Wilson (Tracy, Calif.), freshman Nicole Matson (Castaic, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to force in the first run of the game. Senior Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.) and junior Briana Santos (Garden Grove, Calif.) stroked back-to-back RBI singles, then senior Mandy Hickman (Phoenix, Ariz.) drew a walk and the Tigers lead grew to 4-0.
Moments later, Hendrickson singled to second base to make it 5-0. One out later, Goldsand reached on an error, allowing Santos to score, pushing the Tigers' lead to 6-0.
The score remained 6-0 until Santa Clara scratched across a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from Shelby Gibbs.
The Tigers responded by ending the game via run rule with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Matson reached on an error to start the fifth, then Jorgensen drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Santos dropped a sacrifice bunt down the third base line. The throw got away down the right field line, allowing Matson and Jorgensen to score. Santos, meanwhile, came all the way around to third. One out later, Pacific pinch hitter, senior Lauren Sandelin (Sedro-woolley, Wash.) ripped a single down the third base line to drive in Santos and end the game.
Jorgensen (1-4) earned her first win of the season, allowing one run and six hits and a walk.
Kaitlyn Rauschnot (0-6) suffered her second loss of the afternoon, surrendering six runs (five earned) on five hits, two hit batters and a walk in one-third of an inning.
Pacific returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 15 as the Tigers host San Jose State in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. and can be followed via Gametracker.
