
Tigers Fall to Big West Rival Cal State Northridge 4-3

Northridge, Calif.: - The Pacific women's tennis team lost a tough 4-3 decision to Big West rival Cal State Northridge 4-3 on Sunday, March 25th at the Northridge Tennis Complex. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 5-8, 1-2 in Big West duals, while the Matadors improve to 6-5, 2-1 in the Big West. Cal State Northridge held a 2-0 lead in the match, after winning the doubles point and the No. 2 singles position, before the Tigers stormed back. Pacific was victorious in three straight matches to take a 3-2 lead. Freshman Sasha Fisher (Southampton, Bermuda) made quick work of Sonya Kumar, dispatching her in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to pull Pacific to within one. Then sophomore Helen Schneider (Dernbach, Germany) took care of Kasia Krasinska at the No. 4 singles spot 6-2, 6-3 to tie the match at 2-2, which was followed by a hard fought 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles for freshman Svenja Arens (Bensburg, Germany) over Canna Furuta. The next match to be decided was at the No. 1 singles positions, where senior Vana Mrazovic (Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro) was defeated by Silvia Gutierrez in a tough finish 7-6 (5), 7-5, which pulled the Matadors even at 3-3. The outcome of the dual came down to the No. 5 singles position, as it was the only match of the day to go to a third set. Sophomore Carla Tamborini (Arcadia, Calif.) took the first set over Ana Matijasevic 6-4, but fell in the final two sets by the same margin, making the outcome 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 and a 4-3 victory for Cal State Northridge. Pacific returns home to Stockton on Tuesday, March 27th as they host Harvard at Hal Nelson Tennis Courts at 2pm.
