
Tigers Fall Short at Big West Quarterfinals Against Cal State Northridge, 4-3

Indian Wells, Calif. - The No. 4 seeded Pacific women's tennis team fell to No. 3 seeded Cal State Northridge 4-3 in quarterfinal action at the Big West Tournament on Friday, April 27th at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The Tigers and Matadors played a marathon match that lasted close to four hours as Pacific fell to 8-14 with the loss, with CSUN improved to 12-6. Both teams battled back and forth as, after the Matadors won the doubles point, Pacific posted two quick points at No. 6 and No. 5 singles as sophomores Clara Schuhmacher (Zaragoza, Spain) and Carla Tamborini (Arcadia, Calif.) both posted straight sets victories to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage. CSUN then marched off two straight victories of their own at No. 3 and No. 1 singles to retake the lead at 3-2. Pacific tied it back at three apiece as sophomore Jolanta Twarowska (Hamburg, Germany) came back to stop Kanykey Koichumanova's 13-match winning streak at No. 2 singles with a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 triumph. The deciding point came down to No. 4 singles as the Matadors Ana Matijasevic held on to defeat Pacific junior Helen Schneider (Dernbach, Germany) in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
