Svenja Arens, Sasha Fisher Advance After First Day of Saint Mary's Invitational
Oct. 10, 2008
Moraga, Calif. - Kicking off the first day of action in the Saint Mary's Invitational, two singles players and one doubles team on the Pacific women's tennis squad advanced into a second day of play on Oct. 10. Junior Svenja Arens, who claimed Big West Conference Honorable Mention last season, easily swept her opposition from the White ITA singles bracket and will continue to the Round of 16 beginning tomorrow. However, Arens was not as fortunate in her first round of doubles action, falling to Amber Silverstone and Olivia Marshall of San Jose State when paired with Kateryna Nezhura. Though earlier in singles competition, Nezhura was forced to withdraw from the White ITA singles bracket in her first round of play, because of an illness that affected her play. Pacific's hope is still alive in doubles play, however, in the hands of Amber Abdallah and Clara Schuhmacher, who fell early on in the Blue ITA doubles quarterfinals but rebounded nicely with an 8-6 victory over Emma Shapiro and Noelle Eades of UC Davis in the consolation bracket. The win ensures Pacific a second day of competition in doubles action. The Saint Mary's Invitational resumes tomorrow and runs throughout the day, with championship rounds set for Sunday, Oct. 12.
