After spending the 10 years assisting the Tigers during summer camp, Al Johnson took on the role of volunteer assistant coach prior to the 2006 season. One of Johnson's primary roles continues to be video editing and scouting for the Tigers using data volley software. Al came to Pacific from the University of Texas-El Paso where he was an assistant volleyball coach and lecturer in the Kinesiology Department. Johnson also served as a volunteer strength and conditioning coach at UTEP, handling the track and field program. While in El Paso, Al served as the Preparedness and Response Manager of Disaster Services for the El Paso area chapter of the American Red Cross. Under his supervision and leadership, American Red Cross volunteers responded to some of the most devastating catastrophes the South and Southwest have seen, including Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Prior to his time in El Paso, the former Air Force Captain Johnson had stints as the assistant coach at Cal State San Bernardino, New Mexico State and Northern Arizona. During his time in the Air Force, he also served as a coach for both Air Force and Inter-service women's volleyball teams. Johnson helped the Air Force squad to a Silver Medal during the summer of 2008 at the Armed Forces Championship. Two years earlier, during the summer of 2006, Johnson helped guide Air Force to the Women's Volleyball Gold Medal during the Armed Forces Championship. In addition, Johnson led the 2005 Armed Forces team to an undefeated record and a gold medal in international competition. A native of Hawaii, Al currently makes his home in Stockton. Wade on Johnson "To have someone with Al's level of experience as a volunteer is almost unheard of. He is a very high energy and positive energy person and helps our team a great deal." |
