Tigers Take Down Sonoma State, 8-7

Feb. 9, 2008

Stockton, Calif. After losing a close game to CSU Monterey Bay earlier in the afternoon, the Pacific women's water polo team returned to Chris Kjeldsen Pool to defeat Sonoma State by a score of 8-7 on Feb. 9. With the win, the Tigers ended a four game losing streak, captured their first win of the season, and improved their record to 1-4 on the year.

Much like their game against CSU Monterey Bay, Pacific controlled a majority of the first half of the game as they outscored the Seawolves by a score of 6-3 in the first two periods.

After trailing 1-0 less than a minute into the game, the Tigers bounced back with a goal from Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawai'i) and three consecutive goals from Kellie Fletcher (Roseville, Calif.) to earn a three goal lead after the first period.

In the second period, both teams traded goals as each side scored twice before halftime. Tawarahara scored first for the Tigers with her second goal of the game, while another goal followed shortly behind the Seawolves second score of the contest, when Bridget Geck (Huntington Beach, Calif.) found the back of the cage for her first time of the contest.

At the start of the second half, Sonoma State captured momentum by scoring four consecutive goals over the last two periods. The Tigers were resilient though, as two goals scored by Geck and Alex Kutac (Houston, Texas) sealed the Tigers' victory. Kutac's game winning goal came with just over a minute left to play in the contest.

The Tigers will next be in action on Feb. 16, when they hit the road to play Stanford at 1:00 p.m. The team will play their next home game on Feb. 17 against Fresno Pacific at noon.
